Headless Shopify: When It Makes Sense (and When It Doesn't)

Headless commerce gets a lot of hype, but it introduces real complexity and cost that isn't justified for every business.

Headless makes sense when you need a highly custom front-end experience beyond what Liquid theming can deliver, when you're running omnichannel content beyond commerce, or when performance requirements are extreme.

It's usually the wrong call for stores under a few million in revenue that just need a fast, well-built standard theme — the added engineering overhead outweighs the benefit.

If you do go headless, Shopify's Hydrogen + Remix stack is our default recommendation because it's purpose-built for commerce and deploys natively to Shopify Oxygen.
